Your brain doesn’t stop working on a problem just because you’ve stopped looking at the screen. The default mode network — the same circuitry that’s active when you’re washing dishes, walking, or showering — keeps consolidating and recombining what you already know, often surfacing the fix that hours of focused staring couldn’t find. That’s not procrastination; it’s how insight actually works.
Lin-Manuel Miranda put it well: “A good idea doesn’t come when you’re doing a million things. The good idea comes in the moment of rest.” Next time a bug won’t budge, step away from the keyboard for a few minutes — the fix might be waiting when you get back.
